History of Formula One

Formula One, Formula 1 or F1, also currently officially known as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest class of auto racing sanctioned by FIA.

The "formula" in the name refers to a set of rules to which all participants and cars must comply. The 2009 F1 season consists of 17 races also known as Grands Prix, held on purpose-built circuits and public roads or closed city tracks. The results of each race are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for the F1 drivers and one for the teams also referred to as contructors. Both drivers and constructor teams are required to hold a valid Super Licence, the highest class racing licence issued by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile.

Formula One is rooted in European Grand Prix motor racing of the 1920s and 1930s. The foundation of Formula One was formed in 1946 with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile's (FIA's) standardisation of rules. The World Drivers' Championship was createed in 1950, due to the rising costs of F1 racing, the category become a very specialised with national races finally coming to an end in the 1980s.

First defined in 1946 by the Commission Sportive Internationale (CSI) of the FIA, as the premier single seater racing category in worldwide motorsport. To start off with Formula One was known as Formula A, however the name Formula One was widely used and became official in 1950.

From this point on regulations changed and evolved steadily to get to the sport today. Formula One is watched by millions, 400+ people over the season, around the world and is one of the premier and most exclusive sports in the world.
